Google penalties can severely impact a business’s online presence and revenue. Automate Google GMB Business Messages with Switchbird Messaging Funnels


This is a quick update on our Google My Business “Business Messages” integration at Switchbird to show you how it works and why we think it is a really big deal.

So let’s look at how it works first. On Google maps I search for Switchbird, bring up our Google My Business listing. You’ll see that we have messaging enabled. So we have the “Message” call to action. By the way, this will be changing to a “Chat” call-to-action. We know from our meetings with the Google product team, that the chat CTA works very well: it drives a lot of clicks. You can imagine, then, that it’s not too far a leap to see that Google will not only be pushing chat and messaging as a way of driving clicks, leads and engagement on Google, and but ultimately ranking businesses for their performance, as well.

Anyway, let’s look at how GMB messaging works when connected to Switchbird. When we engage the automated agent, we get a little typing indicator and then an automatic response. In real-time, this conversation is coming into our Switchbird inbox. Just like any other conversation, it’s subject to the automated behaviors we’ve set up, and we can jump in live and interrupt the automation to engage one-on-one with the customer.

For Switchbird, we have setup an automated lead funnel that triggers the first time someone contacts us. We also serve our classic demo of Switchbird features which is the exact same demo we serve to leads via plain old SMS, but it’s enhanced to take advantage of snazzy Google messaging features, like clickable “chips” for suggested replies.

Our demo offers a bunch of different industry use cases of how you might use an automated messaging funnel for different types of businesses. In this video, I show the contractor example. You can imagine a contractor on the job during the day but not wanting to miss leads coming in by phone or Google. He uses automation to respond immediately to every new inquiry in either channel and do some basic lead qualification and nurture: “Are you looking to have work done on your home?” Yes. “All right. What kind of work are you looking to have done? We focus on full renovations, additions, and outdoor living areas.”

Having the customer choose a project type further qualifies them*and* allows our automation to nurture them along. If they choose “outdoor living area,” for example, we can show them some pictures of outdoor living areas we’ve done and tell them how we go about it.

Of course, Google messaging is great but we might ultimately want to move some of these conversations to a channel that we have more control over or is a little more durable–like text/SMS! So with Switchbird, you can do the kinds of nifty things we’re known for: like present the customer a “Ring me to get a text back” CTA right in the automated funnel to start a text conversation.

Now we’ve got this Google user connected to a phone number and on a new text thread with them, complete with all their details from our reverse phone lookup. Magic.

Finally, when ready, I or my staff can jump into the conversation and take it over from the automation. This feature brings a new element of transparency and personalization to the experience. I can also trigger conversion actions on demand: CTA buttons, send a CSAT (customer satisfaction) survey, request a payment, etc.

It may be early days, but Google is clearly building Business Messages with intention. My prediction? Google will use Business Messages adoption and performance on the channel (including CSAT surveys) to rank businesses. On-site SEO, other GMB tactics, and even customer reviews are manipulable and so rife with spam that messaging presents an (almost) incorruptible private view into a business’s performance. Expect such high value data to become a significant ranking factor and consider making it area of focus for your business in the future..

How does Google my business messaging work?
How it works. Once you turn on messaging, customers will find a “Message” button on your Business Profile and be able to message you at any time. Messages will appear in your Business Profile on Google. You’ll receive notifications for incoming messages.

Think this way, if I wanted to get a price on a computer website, I could write a request with a list of requirements. If I was to phone that through to 3 companies it would take so much longer than copy and paste to my 3 chosen company messaging. Of course, it would lead to a full discussion in time, but it’s easier for a customer to refine their enquiries using a copy and paste statement.

Look at your free GMB home page, it’s found on the left menu under websites when you log into your Google My Business control panel. Can you see around 6 ways of my messaging?
